The Great Locomotive Chase occured in 1862 during the Civil War when Union spies stole a train engine (the General) from the Confederates near Atlanta. The Rebels chased the Yankees with a train (the Texas) running backwards towards Chattanooga! This famous story was told in Buster Keaton’s 1926 silent comedy, “The General” and Disney’s 1956 family movie “The Great Locomotive Chase.”
